I was lucky enough to see John Martyn play live a few times in the late Eightes and early Nineties, and they were some of the best, most intimate gigs I've been to. We lost another good 'un in John, a total legend. Jesus mate reading your tales of woe with "Sunny" has made me laugh. I had a 66 Beetle convertible and a mate of mine had a 71 pop-top like yours. It's very hard trying to look like cool surfie type dudes when you're on a road trip to Cornwall from London in November. Greg my Aussie mate in the Combi had cut two holes for his feet out of his sleeping bag so he could drive and I looked like Arthur Daly (but with a Co.Down accent) in a second-hand sheepskin coat I scored on Oxfam.
